Audio 2: Commentary with Director Philippe Mora
Jim Malden (Rutger Hauer), a Vietnam vet who’s lost his family, lives virtually alone on a bird-filled island, where he’s a committed conservationist. When rock climber Mike Walker (Powers Boothe) is hired by passionate egg collector J.P. Whittier (Donald Pleasence) to steal the eggs of the rare bald eagle, which lives on Malden’s island, he tells Malden he’s a nature photographer to gain his trust. However, Malden’s infectious passion for the wild forces Walker to reconsider the plan.
Thanks. I remember this film from the VHS days. People lamented why Hauer took this role, esp. in the early eighties, but he was an environmental activist so the role probably appealed to him. After they wrapped up shooting they lost 1/4 of their reels! No idea how they achieved that feat. because this was a multi-million$ production. Anyway that’s why the film is so disjointed, the subplots are missing context and no background of Hauer’s character is shown. Imo it’s worth to watch it for Donald Pleasence’s performance alone, he’s one hell of an actor!
