Three people driving into Los Angeles for a Dodgers game have car trouble and pull off into an old wrecking yard where they are held at bay by a bloodthirsty psycho and his crazy girlfriend.
This film could have easily been another travesty by star Arch Hall Jr. and director Landis, but it is instead a rare cinematic moment in which all of the daring experimentation somehow works. The film takes place in real time, 90 minutes from beginning to end, and takes place in one desolate location with seven characters, only four of which are onscreen for a significant amount of time. Under such restrictions even accomplished filmmakers could fail, so how did two people resonsible for some of the worst movies succeed? Maybe the photography by the world class Zsigmond helped greatly, but the film still manages good performances from amateur actors, giving Arch Hall Jr. his ultimate role of the bad guy which his scowling face seems better suited to. The ending “baseball” game commentary will stay with you, it is evident that talent is involved in the film, it is just very hard to believe the sources.
Easily deserving of cult status, this film should be suggested viewing for any filmmaking college.
