Seventh-grade is no fun. Especially for Dawn Weiner when everyone at school calls you ‘Dog-Face’ or ‘Wiener-Dog.’ Not to mention if your older brother is ‘King of the Nerds’ and your younger sister is a cutesy ballerina who gets you in trouble but is your parents’ favorite. And that’s just the beginning–her life seems to be falling apart when she faces rejection from the older guy in her brother’s band that she has a crush on, her parents want to tear down her ‘Special People’s Club’ clubhouse, and her sister is abducted….
Heather Matarazzo is amazingly awkward. It is cringe-worthy. Writer/director Todd Solondz is the king of the disturbing underbelly of society. The bullying is hard to watch. Dawn is not a nice girl but she is the clueless girl trying to find her way. She often hurts people just as others have hurt her. The movie is so uncomfortable that the audience has no choice but to laugh. And then it gets darker. Sometimes it goes over the edge…
Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)
The actors in this film are all perfectly chosen, and the small character details and observations tell the viewer that this picture comes from a director who has been there himself. Thanks for a good copy of this indie treasure!
OTOH, Solondz insists on inflicting the psychological miseries of his childhood on us over and over again, throughout various films. (Happiness (1998) being perhaps the most egregious example.)
I agree we’re giving him free therapy, but at least he makes it entertaining. :D I saw “Happiness”, and it was a little much at times even for me, but WTTDH was the best iteration IMO.
“Wienerdog” made a big mistake by trying to revisit characters like Brandon and Dawn, but without the actors who breathed life into them so vividly in the first place. Again, the actors make this pic for me…
