The Solaris mission has established a base on a planet that appears to host some kind of intelligence, but the details are hazy and very secret. After the mysterious demise of one of the three scientists on the base, the main character is sent out to replace him. He finds the station run-down and the two remaining scientists cold and secretive. When he also encounters his wife who has been dead for ten years, he begins to appreciate the baffling nature of the alien intelligence.

Thank you!
many thanks for the re-up
One of the most boring movie ever made. I had to tape my eyelids open in order to get through it.
yawnn… zzzzz…..
@ St. Bernard: Conceptually speaking, I think maybe the “meat” of this one simply eluded you. The Stanislaw Lem source novel’s essence, that is. The film has some great content, even though it is not one of Tarkovsky’s best. And lead actress Natalya Bonderchuk (the daughter of the director of the renowned, mammoth film “War and Peace”) was, in a word, haunting. No pun intended. The story goes that Tark allowed certain scenes to drone on –such as the opening driving around sequence — so that the Soviet censors would nod off and lose critical interest. It worked ! OTOH, the Soderbergh remake years later condensed it all down to half the running time, but the result wasn’t half as good.
