Shot at a flop house south of Market Street, this film centers around four elevator girls who revolt against their employer played by Big Daryl (aka Kreemah Ritz) as the mean and bossy, Bald-Headed Sally. Michael Kalman, who wrote and directed this piece, had his own political radar finely tuned from his days at University of California at Berkeley. In ELEVATOR GIRLS he does the cameo role of Bun E. Hugger, as well as imbuing the film with a decidedly political angst invoking the spirit of Karl Marx.
ELEVATOR GIRLS IN BONDAGE ups the ante by taking on not just the Republicans but the entire capitalist system and its oppression of the working class. The underpaid staff of a seedy hotel rises up in revolt, and by the time head elevator girl Maxine (the fabulous Rumi) starts spouting a surreal mix of folk songs and Marxist maxims, followed by an uproariously explicit sex scene, you’ll be ready to join the cause. Rarely has the dissection of economic exploitation been so silly, or so much fun to watch.
Elevator Girls in Bondage (1972)
There are a number of titles like this [“The Telephone Book” (1971), “Stick it in Your Ear”, Warhol’s “Chelsea Girls”, etc.), some of them “underground films” and some of them more mainstream, which I’d definitely heard of but had no chance to see when they originally came out even if I’d wanted to. That may have been due to the year and residing abroad, or some other reason. After that, they fell through the cracks or off of the radar. VHS or DVD may have bypassed them as well. So, it’s a most welcome pleasure to be able to remember their existence, to rediscover and be able to acquire them here ! Thanks !
