After being frightened by a peeping Tom at her mansion in the suburbs, the beautiful Susan Gilvray (Evelyn Keyes) calls the police for help. When a policeman, Webb Garwood (Van Heflin), arrives, he becomes infatuated with Susan, and the two engage in an affair. Susan soon ends their relationship, choosing to remain with her husband, John (Sherry Hall). However, Webb’s obsession with her continues to grow, until he begins plotting to kill John and cash in on his life insurance policy.
Excellent commentary by Eddie Muller, very knowledgeable man!
Lots of trivia about the supporting cast and of course very interesting info about E. Keyes, director Losey and Dalton Trumbo. Screenwriter Trumbo didn’t get his credit because by the time the film came out he was aready on the “commie lover” blacklist and could not work in Hollywood anymore. The same fate befell Losey who emigrated to England. Instead of Trumbo some hack got the screenwriting credits but Trumbo found a way to get into the film another way. The voice of Mr. Gilvray on the radio is not from the actor who plays him but from Trumbo. Cameo as a radio voice! Trumbo had a contract for 7’500$ for the script but only got part of it and had to go to court until the studio paid him the rest. For the radio bit he got 35$ according to Muller! Fascinating stuff…
