When Cheryl and her roommate quarrel, Cheryl moves into her aunt’s skid-row hotel in downtown L.A. rather than return home to Ohio. The lodgers are odd, Aunt Martha is a moralizer obsessed with funerals, murder is afoot, and the inexperienced and trusting Cheryl may be the next victim. She wants to be treated like a woman, and she’s drawn to George, a handsome photographer who longs for human contact but sleeps with a water-inflated doll and spies on Cheryl as she bathes. Jeff, a neighborhood clerk, may be Cheryl’s only ally in what she doesn’t realize is a perilous residence haunted by family secrets. And, what happened to Alice, a model who used to have Cheryl’s room?
Paul Bartel’s vision of perversity in a seedy L.A. hotel has more entertainment value than most of today’s re-hashed, redundant, repulsive, wannabe exploitation flicks. The acting alone is uncommonly good for this type, with Ann Ruymen as the not so innocent Cheryl, and Lucille Benson as the proprietor of the unforgettable King Edward Hotel, absolute standouts. The quirky residents are both believable and intriguing. Murder, fetishism, voyeurism, what more could you ask for from this wonderful mixture of bizarre characters? Great photography, great character development, great script, great dark comedy. Highly recommended.
Definitely in agreement with that description. Bartel was a one of a kind director. (If only Joe Dante had done the commentary for this !) And whatever happened to Ann Ruymen ? She should’ve had a much more substantial career.
