Carroll Baker strides confidently through this potentially transgressive film. Indeed in the mid sixties this probably did cause more than a ripple of concern/delight from the cinema audience. For a man to maintain a string of lovers with some or all of those women knowingly complicit has always been more or less acceptable, certainly if he is famous or rich enough. The same for a woman, ah there’s the rub. But for a time such issues were seriously pondered and this film is clearly a product of such thought, even though Mr Ferreri is intent upon asserting his belief in ‘true nature’ in the end. So viewing this very well made film now it is necessary to at least consider the possibility of Carroll Baker’s harem otherwise it will make no sense. Good writing, good acting, good looking lady and good jazzy score from Morricone.
