The Rev. Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) is a religious fanatic and serial killer who targets women who use their sexuality to attract men. Serving time in prison for car theft, he meets condemned murderer Ben Harper (Peter Graves), who confesses to hiding $10,000 in stolen loot. Released from jail, Powell is obsessed with finding the money, and he tracks down Harper’s widow, Willa (Shelley Winters), and her two children, John (Billy Chapin) and Pearl (Sally Jane Bruce).

That’s a very good lineup for the commentary. Anyone who might be left wanting to learn more about this classic should check out the very good documentary on Laughton directing this, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2062501/. It runs 2 1/2 hours, but gives uncommon insight into the work of directing the actors’ performance — child actors in particular. Maybe even qualifies as a Master’s Class for this. It also covers the script, the screenwriter, and the history behind the Making Of. A film buff’s loss that Laughton did not go on to direct more films.
