Maria is in the city, bored with her lover Tammy. An exhibitionist, she answers an ad in the “New York Review of Sex.” She’s invited to a house in Vermont, owned by an eccentric named Spencer, a man who likes to watch. Maria goes, seeking thrills. She meets women who spend their days rehearsing for shows staged for Spencer. He has a concoction of aphrodisiacs, and the women are happy to take the drugs and play – with each other, for the camera, in front of Spencer, and with Boris, Spencer’s assistant who runs the household. Maria throws herself into the games. Which person will prove to be the ultimate degenerate?
“The Ultimate Degenerate” has a title that stakes an impressive exploitation claim. And unlike many other Grindhouse flicks from the time period, it comes very close to living up to its moniker. Certainly nothing else at this time (at least in the states) reached the depths of insane depravity seen in the Findlay team’s trash epics. The plot revolves around various degenerates working for an underground fetish porno ring which involved aphrodisiacs, brutal knife stabbings, and (most memorably) corn on the cob. Its kind of like John Waters meets Film Noir meets Doris Wishman, and its played completely straight.
An aspect that certainly helps the picture is that the Findlays are relatively more ambitious than your average schlockmaker. There’s some creative camera angles and nicely surreal (and shocking) dream sequences, plus several sexual segments that were quite original for their time. Don’t mistake this for being anything it isn’t however. This ain’t no art house Bergman style flick, this here is wonderfully entertaining and depraved trash through and through.
