Composed of four separate and seemingly unrelated parts, “Subconscious Cruelty” is a nightmarish journey into the left brain and the right brain. As the movie opens with a brief dialogue about film as a means of escape, a naked woman and a sharp scalpel initiate the unsuspecting viewer into the dark side, in the first segment named “Ovarian Eyeball”. Then, in disturbing “Human Larvae”, the twisted love/hate relationship between siblings gives birth to unspeakable torment, and in the following part called “Rebirth”, a group of naked men and women roll around on a blood-oozing field, engaging in a pagan ritual. Lastly, in “Right Brain/Martyrdom”, a businessman is plagued by vivid hallucinations of naked female demons, mutilation, blood, and cannibalism.
A gory, low budget, art-house horror with scenes of extreme nastiness, Subconscious Cruelty is not an easy film to watch for several reasons: it is extremely ‘symbolic’ (some might say pretentious); it has no standard narrative; and it features very unsettling imagery. It is, however, well directed and edited, and features some amazingly realistic effects and a pretty decent score.
