Eckhart Schmidt directs a loose adaptation of Hoffman’s horror story. The atmosphere is the strong point of the film along with the music, a throbbing industrial theme offset by the music of Chopin and Vivaldi. One beautifully surreal scene of a piano player in an Italian piazza evokes the feeling of a de Chirico painting.
