An earthquake in the Salton Sea unleashes a horde of prehistoric mollusk monsters. Discovering the creatures, a Naval officer and several scientists attempt to stop the monsters, but they escape into the canal system of the California’s Imperial Valley and terrorize the populace.
Back when I saw this as a young kid (probably on some now forgotten double-bill) it really scared the HELL out of me ! So much so that I had to leave the auditorium and hide out in the rest room for awhile. Creepy atmosphere in places, some good scare setups, and way above average monster mechanics for that period, long before CGI, and on a B-picture budget no less.
Check out at what I recall being the opening scene with the girl swimmer, then take a look at the opening scene of Jaws, and consider whether a young Spielberg might have drawn at least some subconscious inspiration from it.
