A headmaster and a novelist, looking for inspiration, regard a strange natural phenomenon before sharing stories of their own.

A famous writer is taken to visit the Hikari Goke (luminous moss) in the Makkaushi caves in Shiretoko. Whilst there he is told the story of a captain, shipwrecked in 1943, who managed to reach the caves and survived the winter by eating birds and seafood. When the thaw came he found his way to a fishing village, and Japan, now at war, celebrated him as a hero. However, later a box is washed up containing human bones and it is found out that the captain reached the caves with one other member of the crew who died. The captain in fact survived by eating his flesh. The question of whether the captain is innocent or whether his actions should be regarded as a crime is the centre of a court hearing.
