The film has three stories. First is about local village idiot Paletta, who can not afford the services of a whore and so steals a locket from a holy shrine belonging to local mafia don. Second shows the story of betrayal of Pitrinu (who’s dead now) by his lover Fefe. Final episode is about lowlife Lazarus. He is killed by mob boss Toto, but raised from the dead by a local messiah, who is also known as Toto (and is played by same actor).
This movie was initially refused a certificate by the Italian censors and was deemed “degrading for the dignity of the Sicilian people, for Italy and the whole humanity,””disrespectful towards religious feelings,””blasphemous, sacrilegious, and full of moral degradation.” It was passed uncut by the appeal commission with a VM18 rating.
“Totò Che Visse Due Volte”, or “Totò Who Lived Twice” is the most repulsive, disgusting and disturbing dark comedy ever made.
Clearly influenced by Luis Bunuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s films and themes, Ciprì & Maresco’s second feature movie is a living Italian nightmare, full of blasphemy, apocalyptic scenarios, grotesque characters and surreal scenes. The female figure is completely absent.
Zoophilia, rape, sodomy, again blasphemy. “Totò Che Visse Due Volte” is an unique void of madness and sickness.
